Position Summary | North Island College is looking for an on-call, casual Bus Driver. Reporting to the responsible college administrator, the Bus Driver operates a designated vehicle which may be either a bus or van depending on size requirement to transport students to and from college activities. The Bus Driver routinely interacts with college students, employees and the general public in a professional manner. The Bus Driver is required to conduct daily and routine inspections on the vehicle as well as maintain the vehicles cleanliness. The Bus Driver is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College and incorporates and practices the values in the performance of his or her duties. Under Article 1.05 b) of the NIC CUPE Local 3479 collective agreement a temporary employee with an assignment less than twelve (12) months is excluded from the agreement provisions relating to Seniority (Article 11) and Layoff and Recall (Article 12). The offer of this temporary appointment, on an on-call, as required basis, does not guarantee any type of continued or future employment with the College, neither is there any obligation on the part of the College to assign you available work for which you may be qualified. The ending of a temporary appointment is not a discharge and is therefore not subject to the just cause provisions of Article 10.01. |

Duties & Responsibilities | 1. Operates a designated college vehicle bus or van in a safe and professional manner. 2. Transports students to and from various college activities. 3. Conducts pre-trip, in-service and end-service inspections in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act and BC Professional Driver’s Manual. 4. Maintains appropriate records of vehicle inspections and repairs. 5. Adheres to trip schedules, safety rules and regulations. 6. Cleans the vehicle after each trip of debris and washes the vehicle as required. 7. Reports defects and required repairs to the responsible college administrator. 8. Ability to install tire chains in inclement weather. 9. Communicates effectively with students, employees and public as a representative of the college. 10. Advises responsible administrator of road conditions and hazards. 11. May be required to perform other assigned comparable duties within the scope of the knowledge, skills and abilities of this position. |
Required Education & Experience | 1. Completion of Grade 12. 2. Valid Class 2 Driver’s License, including additional courses/training in defensive driving. 3. Minimum three years professional driving experience. 4. Valid OFA Level 1 First Aid certificate. 5. Must present an exemplary driving record as demonstrated by a current drivers abstract. |
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities | 1. Demonstrated knowledge of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and regulations. 2. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 3. Ability to manage safety sensitive situations which may require judgement and critical thinking. 4. Physical capable of performing job duties which may include lifting a maximum of 50 lbs. |
